Closing the Education Funding Gap in Illinois
A major public policy issue that has a significant impact on the state of Illinois is education funding. Despite the efforts and progress made towards increasing funding in public schools, low-income and minority students are still receiving less funding than their wealthier peers. Therefore, more work needs to be done to guarantee that these schools are receiving the necessary resources to provide high quality education to their students regardless of their socio-economic background.
Currently, the state 's education funding formula adopted in 2017, aims to close those funding gaps between wealthier districts and underfunded districts, and increase the funding received by schools serving minority students and students of low-income families. In recent years, education funding has been subjected to cuts and budget constraints, some of them due to the pandemic, which destabilized the state’s economy. To address this issue, the state must prioritize education funding and explore ways to increase revenue streams that help alleviate economic crises without cutting education funding.
All in all, the state of Illinois must continue to prioritize education funding, increase education funding, work towards decreasing its reliance on property taxes and work towards a more equitable system. It is imperative that the state recognizes that access to quality education is a fundamental right for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, and that it is its responsibility to guarantee that all students have the same educational opportunities.
