Coach Krzyzewski, or Coach K, was known for being the Men’s Basketball head coach at Duke University from 1980 to 2022. With 5 national titles, 13 Final Fours, 15 ACC tournament championships, and 13 ACC regular season titles, Coach K is known for being one of the most distinguished college basketball coaches of all time. At the beginning of every chapter, there are quotes from Coach K. Some of my favorites were from chapter 4: “What ever a leader does now sets up what he does later. And there’s always a later”, “My goal has to be worthy of the team’s commitment”, and lastly, “Every season is a journey. Every journey is a lifetime” (P51). In explaining, he talks about his past and the lessons he learned from his parents and former coach, Bob Knight. At the end of every chapter, there are “Coach K’s Tips” which, as the title says, summarizes the important tips Coach K gives in each chapter. In the first five chapters, some of the important lessons I have learned were: Chapter 1: “Mutual commitment helps people overcome the fear of failure”, Chapter 2: “Never let a person’s weakness get in the way of his strength”, Chapter 3: “Discipline is doing what you are supposed to do in the best possible manner at the time you are supposed to do it”, Chapter 4: “Never set a goal that involves number of wins-never. Being able to communicate with others, having trust in themselves and others, having responsibilities and taking responsibility for them, caring for themselves and others, and having pride in themselves is very important in becoming an effective leader. From the coaching aspect of it, learning to think as one and working together is what is going to make a successful team. The quote from chapter 4, “Every season is a journey. Every journey is a lifetime” is so impactful. After the passing of Kobe Bryant, I would always hear this quote, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey”, when I read the quote from Coach K, it made the quote from Kobe Bryant more important in my life.
