What is the difference between a.. I intend to utilize my leadership philosophy in the future and perhaps add to it throughout the years as I continue to become more experienced and wiser with every situation and leadership position. One cannot know how their attitude could change over time, however, I am confident that the experience of transitioning from an Army Officer to a Coast Guard Officer has already given me different perspectives and views of how certain cultures and situations can be handled but ultimately still being the servant leader while accomplishing the end goal. I am very grateful for this learning experience here; I am more prepared for my next assignment but will continue to grow as a leader through more teaching and life experience. I will continue to follow the wise words of Marine Corps Lt. General Lewis “Chesty” Puller, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge”. This experience throughout the DCO course has only reinforced my leadership philosophy of servant leadership, not just with my future superiors and subordinates, but also with my peers. An additional takeaway from this course has been getting to meet and network with so many individuals who come from so many different backgrounds and walks of life in addition to learning from them and their experiences and leadership philosophies as well; and I fully believe we will maintain our connections after our time here at the U.S. Coast Guard
