Cognitive Behavioral Consultation: Overview Cognitive behavioral consultations are common place in counseling settings (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 2011). In this essay, I will outline the steps necessary to perform a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and explain the importance of an equal power-equal value relationship between the consultant and consultee. Additionally, I will cover three ways to decrease an undesired behavior, as well as three ways to increase a desired behavior from a consultee/client. Finally, I will discuss some of the foundations of the Eclectic-behavioral model. Analyzing the data should show the consultant the environment in which the unwanted behavior occurs, and stressors or triggers, and help determine the relationships with behavior and other factors (Korinek, 2015). Per PBS World (2017) from the information obtained, a consultant must form some hypothesis to explain why the behavior is happening. Next, a consultant will need to develop an intervention or plan to address the unwanted behavior (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 2011). Moreover, the choice of the intervention is important, the CBT intervention must allow the client to have freedom, unrestricted, and be effective (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 2011). Three strategies to increase a desired behavior are modeling, self-talk, and positive reinforcement, (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 2011). Modeling can be used with a consultee by using media, literature, or others to show what behavior is appropriate (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 2011). Furthermore, modeling a behavior gives the consultee an example of how to conform. Additionally, self-talk or what we say to ourselves daily can be used to increase a desired behavior (Morris, 2016). To elaborate, a consultee’s inner thoughts could be detrimental to a change in behavior, but positive self-talk can reinforce the desired behavior and increase self-esteem (Morris, 2016). Finally, positive reinforcement is rewarding the desired behavior, thus encouraging the behavior to be repeated (Brown, Pryzwansky, & Schulte, 2011).
