Up until this point behavior modification has discussed how to measure behavior and any corresponding changes, basic principles, and procedures on how to establish new behaviors. The next logical step deals with already established behavior and how best to either increase desirable behavior or decrease undesirable behavior (Miltenberger, 2016). Changing a person’s already established behavior is not as easy as telling someone to do more of this or to do less of that. On the contrary, research regarding behavior modification is extensive and implementing behavior modification procedures is carried out utilizing scientifically tested techniques that ensure behavioral change is both effective and lasting. Yet before any such procedures can be implemented you must first discover the underlying reasons for a person’s behavior.

Sometimes all it takes to get another person to do something more desirable is simply showing them an alternative way. Not necessarily a better way…just a different way. I am limited in scope in what I can and cannot do at my place of employment with my crisis patients due to my being only a student of counseling who has yet to obtain licensure. However, reinforcing an adaptive behavior and ignoring a maladaptive behavior does produce an increase of desired behavior and a decrease of undesired behavior, respectively.
Some of my clients seek attention by “acting out” or by being mildly disruptive and by diverting my attention elsewhere they often times cease this particular behavior. On the other hand, when my clients are compliant with the unit’s rules such as getting up in the morning, personal hygiene, and attending group, and are offered positive affirmations they tend to be even more compliant with their
