Strategies for Students with Learning Disabilities Students with learning disabilities struggle to understand content areas in math, social studies, science, reading, and writing. When students struggle academically, teachers use research-based and scientifically-based strategies to help students overcome or manage with deficits in those areas. “As students shift from grade-levels, the demand for reading and comprehension increases” (Boudah, D. J., 2013, p.148). Therefore, using different strategies based on the Georgia Department of Education Standards will help students with learning disabilities overcome barriers that are exhibited in a general classroom setting.

According to Georgia Standards, MCC4.O4.3, students are to solve multistep word problems with whole numbers. The purpose of the strategy is to provide a variety of ways for students to use to help them solve mathematical word problems.
The last article, Reading Comprehension Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities, discusses text enhancement strategies that are used to help students understand and improve their reading comprehension skills (Jiteiulru, A.K., & Gajtia, M. 2011). Students with learning disabilities often display a deficit in remembering or recalling information that they have read. The use of graphic organizer can help students organize their thoughts on paper.

As a teacher, UDL provides me with questions such as what, why, and how while I am planning for my students. As taking that into consideration, along with the story map, the two tools are used to help students with reading comprehension problems. To incorporate both UDL and a story map in my lesson, first, I would gather a baseline to ensure which students would benefit from this strategy of using story maps.
