Collaboration Reflection

Collaboration is a vital piece to being a successful school counselor. As a school counselor, there is so much to know and so much to do that more often that not, we are not going to be able to do it alone. With that said, it is important for us to collaborate and work with stakeholders, such as teachers, parents, and the community, to help our students and maximize our work as school counselors. Overall, this class has taught me a lot about how important collaboration is and the ways we can collaborate as future counselors. The three main assignments that we had to complete helped us gain a better understanding of the different ways we can collaborate in schools in regards to multiple areas.
First, the classroom management critique was an assignment that I was unsure of at first. I did not know anything about classroom management and what I should be looking for. This assignment allowed us to delve deeper into a topic of interest to really see what must be done to meet the needs of students of a particular population. Regardless of what topic was presented on, it was clear the collaboration was required amongst all of the potential issues that we may face as counselors. Furthermore, this assignment also taught me that collaboration is not only needed for the intervention and monitoring of a student, but also in identifying certain students. For example, I learned that most often counselors do not know if a student has an incarcerated parent, but there are certain things that teachers may notice that could point to identifying these students. With that said, it is important for school counselors to build relationships with teachers and school staff to help them identify students that may be harder for them to identify on their
