Individualism was defined basically as a concern about rights over duties and individual accomplishment over group well being, whereas collectivism stresses the importance of belonging and places the group’s needs above the individuals’ needs. Individualist countries tend to be wealthier, and are more likely to have a democratic type of government, and generally individual rights are promoted. Countries such as the United States and Canada are more individualistic and less collectivistic when compared to other countries. On the other hand, countries such as Taiwan, Pakistan, and the Philippines were more collectivistic than the United States. They practice the interdependent self; they are more self-critical and have less need for positive self-regard (Myers, 2014, p40). Personally, I would like to live in a more collectivism type of world but that’s hard being that in today’s day and age it’s impossible to even have respect and manners towards each other. The dynamics of the world has changed drastically and its becoming more harsh, violent, and more every man for himself, rather than an attitude of lets come together and make everywhere a better place to live. Being that I am from Miami I am not so sure I would want to go back and live there, especially with the crime rates in areas located within Miami such as Miami Gardens. Hialeah, and Opa Locka.
