The book “Anthem” is a written by Ayn Rand. The genre of the book is Science Fiction. It as if the book is in a utopian world and certain people rule this world. The society of the people in this book is planned out by the high level of rulers. “Anthem” takes place in the future in a place unknown.

No one thinks for themselves, and there is no individuality, everyone has to think like a group. The leaders are called Council of Scholars and they tell everyone in the society what to think and do. No one is allowed to be different, and everyone is supposed to be the same, which is expected to make the society equal.
In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, mankind is a philanthropic machine. The brotherhood nobly works together to achieve a common goal. In doing so, each man is asked to disregard his own personal means and goals. For every decision must be a collective thought and every advancement, a joint action. However, one man in this machine malfunctions.

In the book everybody in the society are extreme followers and take the Councils laws as absolute truth, they do this voluntarily not by force. Many few are exceptions to this obeying this tyrant council, who preach extreme communism, and that no one person matters at all, but only the survival of mankind matters.
“We, Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power,” (Rand 52). Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel, Anthem, the society in the book is taught from birth to think only in plural which has gone so far that the words such as “I” was abolished and anyone who would say or do anything alone would be punished/ burned. The main character, Equality 7-2521, discovers light for the first time. Equalities discoveries and experiments helped him first start to question his existence. After the discovery of light and electricity he brings it to the house of scholars where it gets turned down which sends him on a path of running away and a steep slope to selfishness.

Equality faces internal and external conflict in his path to heroism, faces conflict with others, but also himself. As his desire for a new life grows, more problems arise.

Ayn Rand Was Very against Collectivism She shows this by making the main character, Equality 7-2521 an independent thinker. though he starts out being Compliant to Society's rules he always knew he was different.
The word “I” has a significant impact on our society. Its absence gradually lowers our society to have unjust expectations of people, and allow those expectations to influence our government. The book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is an example of this occurrence. There is no use of the word “I”, “my”, or any word that implies individuality, as it has been prohibited by the government.
Individuality is defined as the quality that makes one person or thing different from all others. However, individuality does not exist in all societies. Equality 7-2521 is a gifted individual who is different from his peers in the fact that he has personal interests.
Collectivism and Selfishness in Anthem Imagine living in a world where everybody's lives are completely mapped out by the government. Where every decision is made without the input of the citizens it affects. In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand depicts a completely collectivist society, where every idea, action, and invention is purely for the benefit of society as a whole. Everything is done with the entire population in mind, and individuality is extremely frowned upon.

A dystopia is the vision of a society in which the conditions of life are miserable, characterized by human misery, poverty, oppression, and violence. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is set in a dystopian society where there is no free will and everyone is forced to think alike. Dystopian societies are said to only be in novels and nothing more than fiction, but what if that wasn't completely true? North Korea is completely excluded from the outside world and controlled by their government.

In Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel, Anthem, the citizens are trained from birth to think only in the plural, to the point where they cannot even conceive of individuals, but only see each other as part of the whole group. Rand’s protagonist, Equality 72521, begins the novel as a street-sweeper who is devoted to the group, but begins to move towards individuality as he progresses towards pure selfishness, as Rand believes we all should. Rand uses the words “we” and “I” to represent Equality’s journey from being dependent on the group, to being utterly independent of everyone.
For decades now, critics have had conflicting opinions on whether or not the work of Ayn Rand should be praised for its introduction of a new philosophy or criticized for its validation of bad elitist ways. Not only are there so many pages of information in her books, there are also countless interpretations that all contradict each other. These meanings have been brought together by how a character is seen by the author since the same traits in one character may seem evil, but good in another. Critics and politicians alike can wrap her novels to fit their own interpretations even though she has established a thick contrast. Collectivism is when there’s total social and environmental control in a society and no one is allowed chose for them self. Individualism is when one has to chose to do something by him or herself.
