Luke Quinn Ms. Bonica Banned books. 2/11/15 In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand a major theme is oppression. In the book everybody in the society are extreme followers and take the Councils laws as absolute truth, they do this voluntarily not by force. Many few are exceptions to this obeying this tyrant council, who preach extreme communism, and that no one person matters at all, but only the survival of mankind matters. The citizens are forced to follow this extreme social construct, but even if they were given the right to be free and live for themselves without the powerful rule of the government controlling the words and belief of everyone I believe that they would keep on this path because they were born into a place where this ideology that we do it for the betterment of man, would still be in place. In the book it is extremely rare of for anyone to against the rules of the government. In the book the civilians are extreme conformists and are devout followers without questioning the ethics behind this government or culture. I believe they do this because some fear the consequences that go along with it, but I think for the most part many cannot fathom a world without these rules. The discipline those who develop their own self and ask to many questions are treated by imprisonment and execution. In the book I believe that many have their personality in private, but keep it inside like Equality and the golden one, but I also believe many don’t have independent personality’s, and are not independent thinkers and rather followers who are not capable of making moral decisions by themselves, for example I should not do this or I will get in trouble and no other moral reason inside
