I have always wanted to change the world. Since I was a young child, I wanted to be an architect. My mother always tells the story of one day when I came home from kindergarten, and upon entering our home immediately asked her if I would be an architect in the future. A question that baffled my mother as no one in my family, one composed of working-class Dominican immigrants, had ever been to college, much less were architects. From a young age, I created fantastical worlds using toys such as Legos to structures, and then later through writing and art to create new worlds, writing short stories and poems. A departure from the grim reality of my surroundings. As a longtime resident of the city of Lawrence-it was not surprising I would retreat into fantasy. What has always attracted me to architecture was the ability to create, that it is a manifestation of ideas and design.
When I first attended design classes, my idea of what architecture entailed was limited. When in actuality design is a complex, collaborative process. The many design courses I took reshaped and contextualized the work architects do. Further, earning a Masters would advance my career, by allowing to gain more creative and technical skills. It will also allow me to explore a question I wish to answer is' Can architecture save the world?'. Does architecture have the potential to change the world, and if so, what role do I have in that? How do I carry out this? This is a question I wish to answer and is a major reason I wish to attend grad school. I want to expand my experiences and education to help the world. Once in graduate school, I hope to pursue studies in architecture and urban
