As I near my final semesters at NDSU and look towards graduate school I can’t help but try and summarize my time here. I have learned so much about my passion for design and the potential I have to do great things thanks to the education NDSU has provided me. In truth I have never really lived the “real college experience” because that is not what I want to remember when I look back at my collegiate experience. I don’t want to remember the parties I went to, I want to remember the late nights spent in studio chasing a design, the hours spent with my friends and peers working through architecture problems, and the connections I’ve made with faculty members in the architecture department who’ve become almost a second family. On a personal level I have definitely indulged in my own academic exploration through my philosophy minor, which may become a second major soon, because I find the whole prospect of thought and debate truly universal in both my architecture studies as well as with any challenges. Early on I found connections with the most basic of philosophical principles and design. One of which is how we as designers have not only the potential to better society but are arguably obligated to do so. One way I have chosen to pursue that obligation is through my work with the Clinton Global Initiative, which is a foundation that supports and connect innovators around the globe to make the big changes in society. A fellow architecture student and myself are currently pursuing a homeless shelter program and design solution for Downtown Fargo through the foundation. I have also taken it upon myself to help my peers in the pursuit of a better educational experience by acting as a student representative on the Architecture Department’s Creative Means Committee and Faculty Search
