I come from a family of six. In total we’re three sisters and a brother, and then of course, my parents. I truly respect my parents for providing us with everything we needed like support, praise for our achievements no matter how small, and encouragement to pursue activities. It was because of them and my older siblings that I became proud of reading books for fun, writing for myself, and drawing to express my ideas. My hobbies became my strength for projects. I didn’t want a passing grade, I wanted the best one! I am an overachiever.

Most Hispanic parents support their children to go to college and get a higher education. A degree is proof that we have value! Various sets of skills and qualifications determine who gets a job, scholarship, or acceptance to wherever they apply. Our parents know how competitive the world is, and they want us to win. As for me, I realized many high achieving Hispanic students thought of going to college as natural. I am in that pool of students, and I believe it’s our community and parents that influence our decision to go to college. In order to secure a job we want then we must apply ourselves so we can meet its requirements. I know that a lot of Hispanics my age don’t want to go to college because it’s too challenging, and that’s the problem! Hispanics are too comfortable achieving the bare minimum or even less. If we don’t change our mindset about attending college then it’s likely the younger generations won’t either. Scholarships available to Hispanics are from Hispanics who want more of us to afford going to college. They want to help us get a degree, relieve our financial stress, and make it possible to attend college. After our years in college we can do many things that a small percentage of Hispanics have ever done. Education opens so many doors, and so many opportunities.
