I grew up multicultural, my parents immigrated from China and I’ve spent most of my life living here. My life has been a hybridization of the two cultures and growing up I’ve always been very aware of their differences. The idea that a person’s life is heavily influenced by their background has always interested me. Someone’s background affects their upbringing, the development of their values and interests. The realization that changing a person’s cultural heritage has the potential to change how they live their life fascinates me and also presents me with a challenge. With the focus freshman year on the arts and sciences a strong foundation of general knowledge and analytical skills are developed. These can later be helpful by providing students with the ability to look beyond business theories when applying their education to a real-life situation. The rest the years as an undergraduate are more focused on learning about business and the different focuses available within the degree. The Ross School focuses on teaching about the positive influence businesses can have on a community and how it can create multicultural connections, an aspect of the school that really excites me. The MERGE curriculum states that a goal of the later years as an undergraduate is to allow students to experience new cultures and see how differently businesses are run around the world. The school offers multiple abroad programs to help students learn and gain experience about the world. The Global Immersion Program offered by the school would give me the chance to pursue my passion for exploration. The Global Immersion Program allows students to develop a sense of global and cultural awareness while at the same time applying the knowledge to business on an international level.
