What excites me most about a degree in Modern Languages is to get the opportunity to further develop my knowledge of foreign literature, culture and history. Different languages and cultures have always fascinated me. This is because whilst travelling to different countries I have found that even with a basic vocabulary I was quickly able to integrate myself within a foreign community. Somebody once told me that after 12 months spent in France, you will actually begin to dream in French and I cannot wait to find out if that is true. French has been such a pleasurable language to learn, although it is incredibly structured, I find that the spoken word is romantic and melodious.
Spending time studying and working abroad whilst getting to live amongst native speakers will undoubtably improve my confidence and personal skills. Participating in a German Exchange Programme enabled me to experience life in a foreign place and I realised that living abroad can be very rewarding, but not without certain challenges. Reading an English translation of 'Madame Bovary' by Gustave Flaubert gave me an insight into French culture and class in the 19th century but for the current politics and cultural issues of France I regularly access 'Le Monde' newspaper online. Alongside other media such as French cinema, these have enabled me to develop my own learning techniques. These help me to extend my vocabulary, and improve my written and listening skills.
