Being employed as a high school student can have a lasting impact on your life. I have had a job since I was a freshman in high school. My first job was at Morton Rentals. I helped with physical labor, and I would work everyday even at 2 a.m. I had this job up until the summer of Junior year. The next job I got was at Morton Culver's, and I have now worked there for over a year and a half. While working at Culver’s, I got a second job at Colletts Automotive. I have now worked at Collett’s for over a year. While working two jobs I maintained a “B” average through 3 high school semesters, and even though a semester of college. It also teaches the worth of a dollar. Being under 18 the minimum wage in Illinois is $7.75, and if you are over 18 minimum wage is $8.25. After taxes, it takes about 3 hours of working to make $20. So if a teen wants to go buy something, they will think about how many hours they had to work just to get something. Having a job can also help with budgeting time. An average student has 6.5 hours of school, 3.5 hours of homework, and a recommended 8 hours of sleep at night. With an average of 18 hours of the day being used already, this leaves them 6 hours to work. With an average shift at a fast food restaurant ranging from 3-6 hours, this can show how a student would have to budget their time to get their homework, job, and a good amount of sleep at night. Having a job in high school can help a teen in their future. This can help teach a teen what to expect in a workplace. While not every workplace is the same, it can show how you have to work with people that may be the exact opposite of you. It also can teach basic skills. You can learn how being on time is important, how to act towards customers, and even how to work well with
