If it were not for my surroundings and the meaningful people I have encountered in my life I would not have grown into the person I am today. All the skills I possess and the drive I contain stem back to the influence of my family, culture, community, environment, and education. Through the lessons cultivated, I have grown into a strong and leadership focused individual who wants to pursue a career in teaching and ensuring integrity onto forthcoming generations. Both of my parents grew up with single mothers that worked night shifts struggling to provide for them. My junior year helped me understand more what kind of teacher I would want to be in AP Language and Composition. My teacher, Ms. Hooper, was someone who cared about us beyond our grades; she wanted us to excel in life and gain real benefits from high school and work towards creating a future for all, and not just ourselves. For the spring semester, last year with the help of our powerful and caring teacher my class and I developed a program we call ‘Jet Pilots’. The purpose of the club is for upperclassmen to assist freshman in understanding high school, the classes, the routes they can take, and everything that is accessible to them. The education I received from her English class taught me more than new writing skills but that I had a teacher who wanted me to accomplish something great, and is apart of achieving a better experience of the students in my high school. This teacher who impacted my thoughts on the effects teachers can have is also a graduate from Appalachian State University which makes my desire to attend there so much greater, so that through the Reich college of education I can make myself someone as helpful and influential to her students as Ms. Hooper is. The small town I was born in, everyone knows everyone. I have grown up around the same people for these first 17 years of my life and have never seen the functions of anywhere except this small southern town. Yes, growing up in this town has made me extremely sociable, kind to all people I make acquaintance with and provided me with friendships that will last a lifetime but I also want to flourish somewhere bigger in the future and discover all the world has to offer.
