Falling in love with art, as it has always loved me. As long as I can remember art has been a way of escape for me. It’s the one area where you can allow your imagination to run wild. Despite the fact that art has loved me through and through, I must admit that there were times that I pulled away from it thinking another path would suit me better. While attending college I was struck with medical issues involving my hands, and I thought my artistic abilities were over. As I tried to hang on to my craft the more it felt impossible for me to pursue a career in art. I had to drop class after class causing myself to fall more and more into a downward spiral. I began to lose faith in myself. So I decided to pursue another path, which in turn God made it very clear that it wasn’t for me. I went ahead and took my associate’s degree because I had made up in my mind that I had come too far to just end things. I took a break to find out what it was that Melody could do without being in pain. The goal was to help second generation Latino children speak and read in Spanish. However, the things I received from this experience was that my 8 year old student held on to everything I told him. He had to read me a story and draw something from the book that he learned every time we met, and I remember giving him one critique about the way he held his pencil. After that one critique, he remembered it every time he had to draw a picture.
