Walking down the streets of Honolulu as a freshman in college, and seeing John A. Burns School of Medicine, really had me contemplating about my future. Every time I went by this complex, it reminded me of what I wanted to do in life, and who I wanted to be. Although I had extenuating circumstances while living here the first time, my situation has improved. As a first generation college graduate, and first person in my family to visit Hawaii, I am now much more familiar with what is expected of me. My last year as an undergraduate at UHM taught me several things, including that I was capable of succeeding at this level of academics, and that there were people at the school who were willing to guide me. Burns School of Medicine much sooner. My first couple of years were a learning experience, and I did not make any of the same mistakes twice. My original plan was to complete my degree at the University of Hawaii and then matriculate into the medical school. Due to extenuating circumstances, both financially and personally, I ended up having to leave the University of Hawaii after a few years. I really had to get my priorities in order, and mature as a student. I was able to leave the University of Hawaii in good standing, receiving A’s in 4 of my final 5 classes. This spark of success prompted me to ask myself if maybe I had finally gotten my priorities in order and was ready to succeed once more. Now, three years later, I am looking for a medical school to attend. Having had success in my last year here, being more mature as an individual, and also having the experience of living there makes this school seem like an ideal fit. I am also certified in the WWAMI program. UHM really helped me to mature as an individual, even with the stress and strain that I was going
