I've learned in my life that even when all the odds are stacked against you, it’s important to keep going and be the change you want to see in the world. In my life, I have juggled college courses,, part-time jobs, and volunteer work. I teach for the Little Medical School, located in San Jose, where I have the opportunity to introduce anatomy and physiology concepts to young children as part of encouraging their excitement for and learning biology. When I work with my kids and see them struggle, I oftentimes encourage them to stay patient, keep working hard, and have fun studying these powerful ideas. As a first generation college student, I see myself as a role model for many of my younger relatives. At home, I help them brainstorm new options for college and career success, share my college experiences -- especially my struggles -- with them, and let them know that I care about their needs and that I am available as a resource. My parents, both Mexican immigrants, were only able to complete primary school before having to work full time to support our family. Because of their barrier to education, they moved to the U.S and stressed the importance of my brother and I to obtain a degree and education. This motivated me to pursue a career in science and health to become a physician. By exploring my options, I am able to gain confidence through volunteering, research, and internships. After obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, I would like to pursue a Master’s which will ultimately prepare me for medical school.
