I was not privileged to be born into an affluent family, yet I took this as a reason for me to excel in everything I do and make sure that my future would not be plagued by hardships. As most people, English was not first language, but I took it upon myself to learn, and demonstrate that I have the potential to succeed in everything that I attempt. I learned that if you want something in life, then you have to work hard, I always had it set out that someday I would attend a University, but this was often difficult to comprehend when my father is the sole provider of my family’s income. Not only will I be the first in my family to graduate from High School, but I have the opportunity to be the first to attend and graduate from a University. I knew that if I wanted to bring forth change in the world, I would have to start somewhere, which is why I joined the Better Education Through Achievement club my freshman year, in which I participated in various fundraisers and service projects. Ultimately, I decided to go another way, which led to me to the National Honor Society my sophomore year. The National Honor Society allowed me to be able to make a difference in people’s lives not just in my community, but on a more global scale. One of the most successful projects that we have had is a project known as Hygiene for Haiti, in which individuals are able to donate hygienic items to people in Haiti who do not have common necessities. Another successful project involved shoe donations, in which we collected gently used pairs of shoes to donate to people who are not fortunate to have them. In the National Honor Society, I was fortunate to be elected President, this has allowed me to organize service projects and encourage the other members to take leadership
