College Admissions Essay: Where I Start As A Math Major

College has been quite a learning experience. I am nowhere close to where I started as a math major. When I was in high school, the idea of teaching was always on my mind, but I always pushed it aside. Half of my family wanted me to do something more lucrative, while the other half wanted me to do something that had more job security. When I would help classmates with work, some would tell me to never teach, and others told me that I should. When it was time to choose a starting major in college, I chose math because I love it, but I didn’t know what I could do with it if I finished my degree. I didn’t have this problem in high school unless I count where there were hundreds of people at graduation. I was in debate and public speaking classes and received A’s for my presentations and debates. Knowing who exactly I am talking to and how they respond or act towards me really helps me when I present material. Children open up easier than teenagers and adults, so I don’t feel like this will be much of an issue when I become a teacher. I am a nervous and anxious person, so talking to people with authority in any way is difficult sometimes. I usually put on a smile and try to start a conversation that will have the other person open up in some way; I can feel more connected with them which makes me more comfortable to be around them. I have used this technique with many people varying in age, and it really helps me to calm down and get to know them in a deeper way. This can help me learn how to relate to the many people I will encounter as I continue on this path towards becoming a teacher. Finally, I feel humor is needed in the classroom. It’s what makes class enjoyable when the material is just hard to find enjoyment
