College Admissions Essay: Who I Am Today

The Education in Zion exhibit filled me with the Spirit of God and allowed a lot of time to self-reflect on my personal choices. Who am I? What is my heritage? Why was I sent here, and why now? What do I want to leave my future students with? Am I even capable of teaching Heavenly Father’s children? As the questions rolled around in my mind, I couldn’t help but hope that someday I could be as successfully loving and caring as the people who achieved so much to get me at Brigham Young University today. If nothing else, in that moment, I irrefutably knew that where I am today is not just a result of my choices, and the choices I make now will also influence my family and students to come. Haven denotes a place of safety, refuge and protection from the outside world. Sadly enough, a lot of the places that the kids are being protected from are from their own homes. As a future teacher, I would like to have a cabinet designated for snacks and food that the kids can have (e.g. granola bars, soup, etc.) so that they know there is always a place for them, and they’ll never go hungry. Maesar’s story about trying to write the curriculum before Brigham Young appeared to inspect it. He only had three days, and at nearly the third day, Karl finally knelt to pray to ask for help in deciding what to write. It was only after he prayed that he was able to find an answer to his prayer. The same thing goes for teaching. In all honesty, many of the decisions I will make will need to involve prayer and pondering before I can make decisions.
