The film, College Inc., is about for-profit colleges. A for-profit college is a college that is controlled by a private or profit-seeking business. Usually these colleges are ones that had little to no money to keep the college running, so they were bought by a private business that funds them until the business makes money. A few examples of for-profit colleges are University of Phoenix, DeVry University, and Ashford University. These colleges were saved from bankruptcy by businesses, but the businesses that saved the colleges are only interested in earning money from the colleges. The business needs to hit a certain number of enrollments to be able to pay the stockholders. So, the business does not care who enrolls, as long as the number of enrollments needed is hit. In order to be successful in getting the number of enrollments, the business will advertise for the college all the time. For-profit colleges will spend from twenty to twenty-five percent of their earnings on advertisement. In comparison, the for-profit college will only spend ten to twenty percent on the students. That is a staggering difference between what the college will spend on the students that are attending there to get a good education and paying to go there versus the advertisement to make more students enroll into the college. The practices and number of enrollments are put in place because the for-profit colleges have to make a certain amount of money. The recruiters can go to job fairs, online advertisement or application, or make telephone calls to people. The recruiters will have a number of people that they have to call or talk to and have to make a certain percentage of them enroll. The procedure is strict because of what the people running the college have to meet, money wise. However, for a non-profit college, these recruiters would not have as strict of a schedule and percentage rate that they need to make in order to get paid. The for-profit colleges do not seem to think that this strict recruiter job is bad. The people in charge of the college know they have a quota to fill and they are going to fill it anyway that they can.
