Course Description
What is college writing and how does it differ from other forms of writing? How do you choose a topic for a paper, and how do you articulate a strong argument? How do you find useful sources in a library or online, and what is the appropriate format for quotations and bibliography?
These are some of the questions we will address in the course. Written assignments and the step-by-step process of writing a research paper will take us to examine a variety of issues such as peer reviewing, creating multimodal texts, oral presentations, and plagiarism.
Although our main aim is to make you familiar with academic writing, this course will also teach you a range of fundamental strategies for writing, starting with organizing your ideas according to rhetoric (the art of discourse and …show more content…

Write clearly and effectively in standard written English.
2. Effectively use the writing process from brainstorming through peer review to revision and final editing.
3. Articulate, organize, and support positions clearly and persuasively in written form.
4. Use writing effectively as a method of inquiry.
5. Read texts carefully and critically.
6. Paraphrase, summarize, compare and synthesize texts.
7. Recognize how various perspectives inform interpretation.
8. Tailor discourse to specific audiences and to specific rhetorical purposes.
9. Recognize the various tasks involved in research, including developing a thesis, locating sources and assessing their credibility, and incorporating sources as evidence to support or qualify claims.
