Once I realized Colorado Christian University was where God was calling me to be, I knew my first three courses in my first full semester had to be English Composition, Business Communication, and Oral Communication due to communication skills being vital in all aspects of life; from speaking one on one in a casual setting to giving presentations to a group in a business setting to writing scholarships and cover letters. Before beginning my business communication course, I knew how valuable this information would be to accomplish my career goals, though I didn’t realize how much I would gain. To deliver an effective message, I must first analyze the situation; gather information, choose a medium, organize the information. Next, when I’m ready to write the message I have to adapt to my audience and their needs. Last, to complete message, I have to revise, produce, proofread, then distribute the message. (p. 92) The Three-Step writing process should be used when composing any message to ensure that all messages are effective and concise.
It has also been stressed throughout this course that I must know my audience and their needs to prepare an effective message. And in doing so, I discovered that I have strong analytical skills and enjoy analysis. Analytical skills are beneficial in many business situations from analyzing an audience profile to the analysis of financial records for a business. Although analysis is a strength I desire to do more of, I have discovered a weakness is creating presentations using PowerPoint, due to this being the first time using it. But, I am excited and confident that when I take CIS-201A, I will obtain the skills necessary to create a compelling and effective presentation.
I applied, interviewed, and received an offer for a position at a hospital within the Louisiana Government, utilizing the skills gained in this course. These skills and knowledge gave me the confidence necessary to accomplish this major step toward reaching my long-term
