Propaganda, advertisements, & marketing all have somewhat of the same overall game plan or one common goal and that is to create some sort of way to promote a product. In the twenty first century, big companies use commercials to advertise products to the population. These two commercials, German Coast Guard Trainee and the Old Spice Commercial have a very similar yet different approach to advertising. In the process of selecting commercials, these two caught my attention due to the humor portrayed in them. German Coast Guard is a commercial used to advertise learning the English language through an online program. They say “Help, help, we are sinking” through the radio and the German coast guard said, “What are you sinking about?” (German Coast Guard, 2006) The man in this video has a really big accent while saying all of this. Berlitz, the company who is promoting this language software, uses humor as their way of advertising. This helps the audience remember the commercial. Likewise, the Old Spice Commercial uses a similar method to advertise its own product. Throughout the commercial, the man is stationary while the background continually changes. Pathos applies to emotion or the means to appeal to a person’s emotions. The commercials are focused on a human’s humor and feeds off that. Ethos is more factual based and logos are more logical. I think pathos is one of the most effective ways of persuasion due to the wider audience that can relate to it. Almost everyone on the planet can relate to emotion verses a fact or logic. These acquire some level of intelligence, which disqualifies a big chunk of the population.
