How could communication be affected by leadership style?
Communication could be affected by leadership style, and it is essential to leadership. Likewise, men and women in workplace can be equal in everything except their communication styles. There are different types of leadership styles such as dictatorial style, authoritative style, consultative style, and participative team styles ("Leadership Styles," 2010). Men and women are different in the way they act or communicate, as well as their leadership styles. “The type of communication that develops between the leader and the workforce is controlled by the leadership style” ("Leadership Styles," 2010, para. 2). “The communication styles were strongly and differently related to knowledge sharing behaviors, perceived leader performance, satisfaction with the leader, and subordinate’s team commitment” (Vries et al., 2009, p. 367). Many effective leaders know that for communication to be effective and efficient the communication must be personalized. Communication and leadership styles can be the essential dynamics affecting the job satisfaction of employees in the organization. Men and women vary in their leadership approaches which effect on their communication with people. For example, in nature women value workplace relationships more than men and tend to create a bond with their followers. The workforce today includes both men and women compared to the past, the majority were men. Understanding and being aware of the differences between men and women’s communication style is very useful working with them. Being able to communicate effectively when working with either men or women in the workplace can get things done faster and easier. As well as, it helps avoid misunderstanding and miscommunicating with each other. “Men and women’s biggest source of conflict is their gender differences when coping with a stressful situation; these stylistic communication differences often cause a rift between men and women in the workplace” (Merchant, 2012, p. 30). Sometime men and women may be sharing the information but perceive the same information to have a different meaning. It is because there is the difference in interpretation due to the gender differences. Both genders have weakness and strengths in their communication. It is vital to recognize the differences to make it work among them (Torppa, 2010). “Understanding the inherent communication differences between men and women will help you to enhance your ability to communicate successfully with other, and to hear, interpret and comprehend others’ messages without judgment” (Mohingra & Azhar, 2012, p.
