Effects of Advertisement on Women in United States

Nowadays, people in western countries come across advertisement in all varieties of media like TV, magazines, newspapers, outdoor billboards, and every web page we access. Even thousands years ago people use primary forms of writing and drawing to persuade others to consume their goods. Moreover, sellers from the ancient Egypt used papyrus to attract people to their goods. In twenties century advertisement become more popular and even has been grown into a propaganda, where leaders manipulated over others but then it eventually changed to a more ethical practice. The sociologist Jessica Castonguay and her group of scientist made a research on the girls under 12. They come up with the results that the little girls see over 77 thousand of different adds on TV and other sources by the age of 12. The comments of these girls were unpleasant but pretty much expectable. Here are some numbers from the research after the girls compare themselves to models from screens and magazine pages. Around 77% of girls think that they are fat, 90% of girls become closer look at their overview, 76% starts to destroy themselves by putting themselves on terrible diets. During the entire research girls wrote their own comments into their diaries with the comments like “I will never be as beauty as ones on TV”(J. Castonguay). Based on the results on this research, women from early ages start to be influence by the advertisement on TV and from other sources. Unfortunately, the problem with self-esteem is not the only one that comes up in effects of advertisement on women. Another issue of such practices is psychological which is depression. Depression comes really often because women are tends to be more emotional and the facts that they are always comparing themselves to “screen ladies” make them stuck. One more problem that women face is the eating disorder. This disease comes not from the physical problems but most of the eating diseases considers as mental problem diseases. Anorexia nervosa is the most common eating diseases. Women are often get this diseases when they overthink of their weigh and their sizes.
