The Community South Medical Center’s CEO is working on updating the strategic plan for the hospital. The strategic plan that the hospital has in place has not been updated in the last three years. The hospital has some major issues they are dealing with to include clinical staff shortages, they do not have non-interfacing information technology systems, they have outdated facilities and infrastructure, the hospital has seen a decrease in the adherence to The Joint Commission compliance and internal audits as well as financial changes in terms of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance patients and the un-insured patients. The S.W.O.T. model is used to analyze operations internally for an organization as well as to look at the organization’s external environment. In the case of Community South Medical Center if the S.W.O.T. model was used to investigate the compliance of standards the first step would be to identify strengths and weaknesses of the internal part of the hospital. As time passes the Community South Medical Center is becoming more of an elderly community. These market trends are very noticeable for the Medical center because the percentage of Medicaid patients is 25% which is an increase of 20% in the last three years. This increase shows more elderly patients are visiting the center. This change of patient demographic will affect how the hospital receives there reimbursements and revenue. It also will affect what services will be in higher demand with more elderly patients. In order to prepare for a change in demographic the strategic plan and mission needs to focus on how to take care of all patients which might consist of having more options for elderly care for example having more physicians from certain specialties. The medical centers needs to make sure the elderly can have access to everything they need and ensure they receive a high quality of care. One study explains that integrated medical care for the elderly is a new strategy being used to improve quality care. This study explains that communication between professionals can be very important in the delivery of quality care (Hartgerink, Cramm, van Wijngaarden, Bakker, Mackenbach, & Nieboer, 2013).
