Since the NFL has no real barrier of entry and virtually no competition to go against it, the NFL runs as a monopoly over American football. Any player that wants to play professional football will try and go to the NFL before going to any other league. The revenue for the NFL is determined based on the demand of the games they put on. If no one wants to go watch these NFL games then the league will lose money and inevitably fail similar to the smaller American football leagues that have popped up and disappeared seemingly overnight.
