Treyton Larkin 1. What is the history behind the lack of a salary cap in MLB? Does the MLB have a problem with the competitive balance between teams? Are owners having a problem making a profit? MLB is the only of the four major American sports leagues that does not have a salary cap. Until it does, player values may continue to rise at a startling rate. At this point, it will be impossible to eliminate much of the wage distribution among the MLB, but a salary cap could help limit how much a team can pay an individual player to prevent, even the thought of, one single player earning a billion dollars. They feel this increased regional interest will cause arena and stadium attendance to rise, inflating the overall profitability of the league as a whole. Advocates of salary caps in professional sports believe that an increase in competition across a league sparks regional and national interest. More competitive leagues draw higher television audiences, costlier media contracts from television networks and more lucrative contracts from advertisers. The salary cap in the National Football League is an excellent example of the system's ability to level the playing field and create a more competitive league. A salary cap places greater impetus on how franchise's spend money. This results in fewer and fewer franchises dedicating large portions of their payroll to unproven players and instead dividing their salaries evenly across athletes who are more adaptable and compatible to their organizational systems. If a salary cap was implemented, players wouldn’t be so greedy and would actually play to win. Teams would be more balanced because the players that know they are good enough to get payed more will go to the organizations that are able to pay the most.(Yankees or Dodgers) Salary caps would affect some individual players because they would either get less or more money. If the organizations weren’t paying as much, they wouldn’t need as much money so the ticket prices would possibly go down. More fans that can settle for ticket prices would buy more tickets, or season tickets which could even bring in more money for the organization in the long
