The Roman Republic was a government ruled by the people in Italy. Magistrates were officials and the most powerful were the consuls. The senate was a group of people who were wealthy and advised the city leaders. The American Democracy is a government with three branches. The executive branch is the presidents branch.
Even to this day, we still use Athens and Sparta’s societal systems and structures because they were so revolutionary. Athens even introduced the idea of democracy, and Sparta had a strong military culture. Although Athens and Sparta were close together, Athens focused on leadership and education while Sparta focused on the military and war. However, due to their different governments and cultures, each has their strengths and weaknesses. However, because Athens focuses on its future leaders, Athens is the better model for a society.

Simply the foundation of democracy in Athens is incredibly important to the governmental system of the current United States. Of course there are the obvious differences between the two systems, such as different ages of voting eligibility, and the fact that gender does not decide someone’s ability and right to make important political decisions. Athens utilized the votes from the people a bit differently as well, with a small 40,000 Athenian men voting on whatever issues simply rose to attention. Elections were also determined through a lottery system, whereas officials in the United States are completely decided by its citizens. There are an abundance of differences between the two governmental system, with the most important policy used by both the Athenians and the United states being the decision to allow the majority, the citizens from any social class, to vote and be a part of a
Aristotle once said in his book Politics, “Democracy arises out of the notion that those who are equal in any respect are equal in all respects” (Aristotle). Ancient Greece was ahead of time, so that everyone felt included. Your gender, social position, and religion do not play a part in the amount of rights you have. Greece was split into many city-states, all with their own types of government and differences. Mainly, Athens and Sparta are most well known.
Democracy is commonly known to be present in the government of Athens. Athenian democracy and democracy in the United States are both similar and different in certain ways. Democracy in the United States still contains basic principalities of Athenian democracy, such as participation status, elections, and government power, although, some parts were changed and improved. The United States has a representative democracy; in which it is a republic.
Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were two of the most powerful nations in the history of the world. Each of them, at some point, had control of nearly the entire known world at that time. One reason for their successes was their strong governments. The United States government is based mostly on the governments of these two nations and without them, our country would be very different place today. Ancient Greece’s form of government changed many times over the course of their success.
The Romans had a system of indirect democracy where the people had the power to vote for representatives who would advocate for them on the state level. The Greeks had a government in which the people directly were involved in the governmental and legislative process. In addition, both systems were flawed in their representation of their people in their respective governments through neglecting a large portion of their population. Both societies did well to create term lengths to decrease the likelihood of corruption and abuse of power through creating accountability. However, the Greek democracy was a caliber above its counterpart.
What is a democracy? A democracy is a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. Two big empires are/were ruled under a democracy, which was Ancient Greek and Modern day America. But what are the differences and similarities of two empires ruled by the same style of government, ruled in 2 completely different time periods? Ancient Greece (Athens) started ruling as an empire in the years 8th century BC.
Democracy, a form of government, allows the people in their own nationality to vote for people in order for them to become representatives as a result to vote on new laws that would affect their own nationality. One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not inclusive, other than male citizens, to gain authority in ancient Athens, ¨Demokratia was ruled by male citizens only, excluding women, free foreigners(Metics) and slaves.¨(Document D), therefore ruling Athens was only accessible to male citizen since since women, free foreigners(Metics), and slaves were not allowed to rule as a result of not being male citizens. One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens, was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not even using the essentials of democracy that is used today, “Thus, by our standards, it was oligarchy, not democracy.¨(Document D), therefore ancient Athens was not using democracy as their form of government, they were using oligarchy,another form of government in which a small group of people has power and control, as their form of government instead of democracy.
When you look at the literal definition of democracy in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, there is a decently large explanation. When looking at this definition and trying to decide whether the Athenian democratic system was truly democratic, one would have to go with the answer no. While it has been stated that Athens is the “cradle of democracy”, and that it was better than any of the other governments in the world, it was still a work in progress. The Athenian democracy, while it did give more power to the people, still left a lot of citizens out. The current American democracy may have steamed from Athens, but they do not really have that much in common.
America wasn’t the first to have and use democracy, but actually it was first used in Greece, The birthplace of democracy. Even though Greece used democracy first it was still amazing how it was being used many years later in different places especially in the American government as an influence. Like the people of Greece and rome they created a government with balance, human rights, and a free government. While different when the Greeks and Romans used it the American government had found ways to balance itself so that they don't have too much power like king George the third. According to Aristotle ¨ govern with a view to the common interest¨. Aristotle believed that a government shouldn't do things that helps and affects certain individuals, but to all people under that government.
1-Greece The greeks were one of the first states, which were complex and large political systems. They also had several forms they could take. Athenian democracy was a classical democratic system developed in the Greek city-state of Athens. This was One of the first governments to be Democratic.
Introduction Monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy and democracy were all forms of government found at different times and in different city-states in Ancient Greece. Elements of more than one of these forms also co-existed, however, and the modern connotations of labels such as these are not necessarily the same as those that prevailed in Ancient Greece. In this paper I firstly describe these various forms of government and provide examples of their use in Ancient Greece. I then compare and contrast the models.
Some people think that ancient Athens was truly democratic, I think not. Democracy is the rule of the whole of the people,excluding minors and maniacs only. Democracy was rule by citizens only, excluding women, free foreigners (Metics) and slaves. By our understanding it was an oligarchy, not democracy.
