Baba and Amir seem to be exact opposites. Baba is large, athletic, brave, and stands up for what he believes in. Amir is timid and prefers writing over sports. However, more character traits are revealed that make the father and son more similar than Amir ever imagined. Amir realizes their similarities when he finds out that Hassan is his half brother. Amir is shocked to find out that Hassan is his half brother, even though Hassan always seemed more like Baba’s son. Amir always thought his father was a brave, honest man, and it disappointed both of them that Amir was a coward. When Amir finds out about Hassan, he realizes that his father was running from his problems the whole time and was not as brave as Amir thought he was. Amir was upset that his father was a liar and stole the truth from him his whole life. Amir loses some respect for his father, but it was a relief to know he was not so perfect, and they both had flaws. When finding out that Baba is Hassan’s father, many negative realizations come to mind. For example, Hassan could have had a better life since he was not fully Hazara. Baba always looked out for Hassan, even getting him surgery for his cleft lip. However, Hassan’s life could have been much better if he was not a servant. Also, Amir and Hassan could have still been friends since they already loved each other like brothers. On the other hand, there are a few positive realizations. For example, it is nice to know that Baba always had the brave, athletic son he dreamed of which is why he always cared for Hassan. Also, it is good for Amir to understand that his father was not perfect, but still tried his best to be a good man and protect everyone which is what Amir ends up trying to do. Initially, it seems like Amir is only more alike Baba
