I chose to compare Botticelli, “Birth of Venus,” and Titian’s, “Venus of Urbino.” Botticelli’s painting is from the early renaissance and Titian’s is high renaissance. Both Paintings depict the image of the goddess of love, Venus. Both artists create their art through the use of hue, value and intensity of color and symbolism. I was drawn to compare and contrast these two works of art because many artist throughout the centuries have depicted the image of Venus in many different ways, and it is neat to find out what each artist sees in what a Goddess is to look like.

Both portray Venus whom typically is known for her innocence and modesty. She is also known for her beauty and perfection. When looking at “Birth of Venus” we can see that these characteristics show. With her portraying such perfection we can tell that classical technique was used. You can also see that she seems shy or embarrassed because she is naked and she is covering herself up. On the contrary, when looking at “Venus of Urbino,” we see a whole seperate woman. We still see a romanticized woman but this depiction of venus is of her lying on a bed. The woman in the painting is a representation of the most well known Goddess, so that the painting wouldn’t be to promiscuous. You can see that the woman is a depiction of Venus through her romanticized appearance her beauty and modesty. Botticelli’s painting on the other hand, is an actual depiction of Venus.
