Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are the most common eating disorders in the world. In the United States, twenty million women and ten million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder (Wade, Keski-Rahkonen, and Hudson, 2011). America has taken an incredible toll and creating a nation of guilt towards food. Eating disorders are a growing epidemic. The psychological effects for anorexia are preoccupation with eating, food, body shape and weight. They may feel anxious or irritable around the meal times and have intense fear of gaining weight. A person affected by the eating disorder will not be able to maintain a normal body weight for his or her own age and height. Anorexic can develop depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism, and dissatisfaction to their body image. The psychological effects for bulimia are mostly the same as an anorexic with a slight difference like feeling of shame, self-loathing or guilt after eating, and obsession with food control. However there are also physical effects from both eating disorders. The physical effects of bulimia are damage due to vomiting including selling around the cheeks or jaw, damage to the teeth and bad breath. They may faint, have dizziness, feel bloated, constipated or develop intolerances to food. The person with bulimia may also feel tired and not sleep well.
