Right or left? Conservative or Liberal? Today, these are questions that many ask before determining how they feel about another person. A political party is defined as an organization with roughly similar opinions. In America there are two main political parties, the Republicans and Democrats. With the two parties holding a majority of public office positions, they have a say in almost every major aspect of a citizen’s daily life. While the aim is for a better America, the idea for the better America greatly differs between Republicans and Democrats, especially when speaking on platforms such as gun control and immigration.

After more than 60,000 gun violence incidents in 2017(gunviolencearchive 2017) and already almost 10,000 incidents in 2018(gunviolencearchive 2018), Democrats have only raised their fight for stricter background checks, a stronger focus on mental health, and have even been looking to ban semi-automatic assault rifles from the everyday human being. Even with the recent mass shootings, Republicans have stuck to their claim that every American has the right to own and carry a firearm. A large reason for that is the Republican parties affiliation with The National Rifle Association, or NRA. For Republicans, the approach towards immigration is clear, “The Republican Party believes in immigration laws and immigration reforms that address the needs of national security. The party has always been divided on to exactly what extent immigration laws should be tightened, but as a whole the party believes that a system needs to be in place to ensure that immigrants who enter this country illegally are not provided with the same benefits that legal citizens are”(Republican Views 2014). The Republicans fight strongly against immigrants, primarily from Mexico, “Referencing terrorism, drug cartels and criminal gangs, Republicans stress the need to track persons entering and exiting the United States and that allowing millions of unidentified persons to enter and remain in this country poses grave risks”(Reeves 2017). The plot of this issue only thickens with Republican President Trump in office, as one of his key campaign promises was stricter immigration laws and with the Democratic party only aiming for looser immigration laws.
