Chapter 4 is much similar to the previous chapters as it begins by narrating the schooling differences between upper and lower class children. This chapter discusses three students who have different experiences due to social class. These students are going to two different schools, Troy High School and Santa Ana High School. These two schools greatly differ as Troy is top-ranked high school nationally, as it offers many Advanced Placement classes, science and technology program, and at least 99 percent of the students continue their schooling in college. Traditional school versus Year round school The idea of year round school is starting to be more the topic of discussion. Many people are for the idea of year round education and many are against it. “If our country began on a year around schedule, it would have seemed bizarre to propose the summer- off schedule as a superior way to educate students” says Principle Hazel Colebank. Although some may feel year round school is great for bettering education, changing what’s considered normal could cause more harm than good.
Do you think schools should have a 4 day schedule? In the past 20 years, schools have adopted the four-day schedule. There are no signs of stopping as 25% of schools are using that schedule. However, most of the schools that are using the schedule are in rural areas and west of the Mississippi River. Although this may sound nice, according to RAND, this causes students' achievements to suffer.

As the month of November comes along annually, every single high school senior is forced to decide which path they are going to take after graduating. For some, it is easy to choose which college to attend and how to pay for it. But, for many, it is extremely difficult to figure out a way to get the funds for college. So, they choose the community college route. Community college is drastically cheaper than tuition at a four year university.

In the United States a community college is defined as a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area. They are post secondary schools and are also referred to as junior colleges, vocational or technical schools because generally the course of study is for two years. The student can earn an associates degree or certification and/or continue their education by transfering to a four year college to complete their educational pursuits and earn a Bachelor 's degree. Community colleges started in the late 1800’s and have grown and evolved over the years. Today many four year colleges and universities have become so expensive to attend that many prospective students are opting for the more affordable alternative of a community college for their first two years of study where they can save money by living at home and taking classes that will transfer to a four year institution, however, there are students that cannot afford the lower cost of community colleges.
Whether year-round schooling should be enforced in Florida schools has been a recent debate. Florida schools should not take part in year-round schooling schedules because it makes sports and jobs very hard to get too, also year-round schooling gives teachers insufficient time to prepare for the next school year. Even though year-round school gives students more breaks, there is no proof that it helps students academically. So traditional school is better and should stay in Florida.
Every student, after he or she graduates from high school will have the choice of attending to a University or a two year Community College. I remember Lee, my friend Joe’s brother, asking me after I finished high school and whether or not I wanted to join to a University or a two year Community College. At the time, it took me a week to answer his question. Similarly, if I was to ask any student where he or she wants to go after they finish high school, one might find that they’ll receive different answers, and for different reasons. For some students it is best to go to community college and focus on getting an Associate’s Degree or taking transferable courses.
It also instills crucial skills like organization, self discipline and the ability to complete tasks from start to finish. In other words, college helps mold you into a more professional individual. Some may fear that they will attend four years of college but won’t graduate. In the article “Why College Isn’t for Everyone,” it’s simply stated that “...more than 40 percent of those attending four-year colleges full-time to fail to graduate...” (“Why College Isn’t for Everyone” 78).
The average school day length in the United States of America is 6.5 to 8 hours average start of a school day is 7 to 8. But are the days to long? Do we start school too early? The National sleep foundation says that the natural tendencies of a teenager are to stay up late at night and wake up later in the morning. That leaves many kids sleep deprived, which can lower grades juristically and leave our minds foggier throughout the 8 hour school day.
How much does summer vacation mean to you? That's the question many families ask themselves as they make the choice for year round schooling. With year round schooling students take several breaks, similar to a winter break in length, instead of one long break in the summer. Some people feel it is a terrible idea, while others say the academic aspect is superior. Although some people feel strong about year round schooling, year-round schooling is not the best educational option for students.
