Two great men on opposing sides. On one side Joshua Chamberlin, the former university professor turned Union colonel. On the other side Robert E. Lee, The highly respected, stone-faced confederate general. These were two very different men with very different hopes for the outcome of the war. They may have had their differences of opinion but both shared a common tie. Both of them needed to know how to control an army and its subordinates. Both of these men had their own individual way of handling their armies and its officers but both were doing it for a common cause. For one’s country. General Lee was a very powerful and respected man. He was a man who had gained much admiration from his role in the Mexican American War and his high honors at West Point. A previous professor of rhetoric at Bowdoin University Chamberlain knew how to speak and knew how to speak effectively. He cold conveys his points to his men with such passions and care for the cause he truly understood how to rally his men when they needed it most. Chamberlain was a very strong leader and was well respected in the military community for his intelligence and his strength to push forward even when facing very formidable enemies. His men saw these admirable qualities in Chamberlain and many of them were very willing to stick by his side. In the novel Killer Angels, Author Michael Shaara recaps some of the events leading up to the battle of Gettysburg. In the novel Shaara recounts a beautiful, morally uplifting speech Colonel Chamberlain made to his fellow man. In the novel Chamberlain is quoted my saying “What we’re all fighting for in the end is each other.” (Shaara, 1974). The quote right there shows how much Chamberlain truly cared about his fellow subordinates and
