Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) and Martin Luther King (1929-1968) worked towards the same goal of ending apartheid. Mandela struggled for the rights of black South Africans,by attempting to defend them from white superiority, as he was president of the African National Congress. This eventually led him to imprisonment for life, but it did not stop him from fighting racism. Even in jail, he refused to wear prisoners uniforms that were only reserved for blacks. When he was finally released in 1990, he became the first president of South Africa. As president, he allowed apartheid victims to discuss their case publicly and for the criminals to take responsibility for their actions.
