The biblical story of the David has been portrayed in numerous pieces of art, interpreted in many ways. Famous artists, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni and Donatello di Niccolò di Betto Bardi both created statues of David. Donatello created his first, and out of bronze material. Michelangelo made his out of marble, and it one of the largest statues. Both have portrayed David in different ways, but showed his strength and triumph over Goliath. The similarities and differences of both pieces, give the viewers the chance to get a well-rounded idea of how the art interprets the story. Both works are located in Florence, created by Florentine artists.

The summary of the story is the idea of intelligence versus physical strength. David was a young boy, who volunteered to battle against Goliath. Goliath was a very strong opponent, and was guaranteed to win. David demonstrated intelligence by winning the battle, unarmored, with a sling. He then beheaded goliath. There are many demonstrations of David, after this battle. Michelangelo represented him with a contrapposto pose, one leg bent and outward, with the sling and rock on him, that was used in battle. Donatello used Gilded Bronze to create the statue, made for the outdoors. Being that both statues are old, they have some problems with them. Since Donatello’s David was kept outdoors, the back of the statue has corroded away and has some damage from the weather. Michelangelo’s David was kept outside for a period of time, making the top of his head diminished from acid rain. There are some dark spots on the marble because it was not of the highest quality. With these impurities, both of the statues still represent courage and many Florentines used it as a symbol of the
