Although the Republican and Democratic parties share some similarities, there are far more differences between the two, because Republicans believe in individual rights, one flat tax, and are against pardoning illegal immigrants. Democrats believe in community and social responsibility, progressive taxes, and are supportive of illegal immigrants gaining citizenship easily. Almost half of all registered voters identify as Democrats or lean Democratic compared with only 44% who identify as Republicans or lean Conservative. The Democratic Party began around the time of America’s independence from British rule. The Republican party is younger than the Democratic party. It was founded in 1854 by people who were against slavery. Also, the philosophy of Republican leans more towards individual rights, individual freedoms, and individual responsibilities. In contrast, Democrats believe in a greater importance of equality and social and community responsibility. Republicans tend to prefer a small government. Both in terms of the amount of people that the government employs and in terms of the responsibilities and the roles that the government has in the community and society.
