The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast servant leadership and followership. We will go over the definitions of servant leadership and followership and then compare and contrast them. In order to be a servant leader there are many qualities to have. In order to be a good follower there are qualities to have. It is important to know the differences and similarities so you know where you stand.
What is servant leadership? “Servant Leadership is a non-traditional leadership philosophy, embedded in a set of behaviors and practices that place the primary emphasis on the wellbeing of those served” (What is servant leadership?). The idea of servant leadership is to put the people that are following first. Meeting the needs and requirements of the followers first. “A reciprocal process of leadership. This term refers to the capacity or willingness to follow within a team or organization” (LESSONS IN FOLLOWERSHIP: GOOD LEADERS AREN’T ALWAYS, OUT FRONT 2021). A good follower will do what the leader asks in order to complete the mission. A good follower will perform what is asked but will use logical thinking and will perform it efficiently. To be a good follower, you would need to be actively trying to learn and seek more responsibility.
How are they the same and how are they different? In the military, there will always be someone above you. There are times when you have to be both a servant leader and a follower. Following the commands of the person in charge and then relaying that information to the followers. Followers need to respect the leader just as a good leader should respect the ideas of the people below them. In the Army, they share the same ethics and values. A couple of examples are respect, selflessness, honesty, commitment, and being trustworthy. This is what servant leadership and followership
