The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast followership and servant leadership. Everyone in the military aspired to be a leader, and some classes speak of leadership, but no one speaks of followership. Looking at a broad picture, most military members start in a followership position. This paper will discuss the role of followership and how it differs from servant leadership. Followership is the readiness to collaborate with others to achieve a larger common objective by being a dedicated team player, supportive, and succeeding at what one does without having star status (Smith, 2016). Someone in the followership position focuses on the leader and their direction, and their main goal is to conduct the objective of the one in charge. Followership requires one to seek additional duties; they have fewer responsibilities than the leader. They need a different level of foresight, cognition, or awareness of a task to perform it (CITATION). Furthermore, there is no expectation to advise, coach, or mentor others, nor are they expected to be stewards of their profession. Servant leadership is the act of putting others first. According to Ken et al. (2019), servant leadership is about helping others reach their professional and personal goals. It all comes down to serving people within a team; those in this position put others before themselves.
