If you were stuck on the canoe who would you pick, the Bass or Sheila? First, he could always pick Sheila because he has been in love with her forever. He thinks that she is quite beautiful and cares for her greatly. He also adores her because of her long tan legs and enjoys watching her tan during the summer. He thinks her white dress shows off her figure more than her normal bathing suit.
In the short story The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant, by W.D. Wetherell, dramatic irony and flashback are utilized to communicate that one should never change themselves for the sake of another. Set during a summer in New Hampshire, Wetherell’s work is from the perspective of a young boy who becomes infatuated with a girl by the name of Sheila Mant. As as result, the narrator sacrifices the opportunity of a lifetime on his fruitless endeavor to win the heart of the girl. In this journal I will be questioning and As I read this story, I wonder if the narrator will pick bass or Sheila. It is possible that he’ll pick the bass.
In the short story, “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant”, written by W.D Wetherell, there's a young 14 year old boy who goes unnamed throughout the whole story and lives in an old cabin with his family on the edge of the river. The unnamed boy gets a new neighbor and starts developing a crush on them. This girl went by Sheila Mants, and he was bound to impress her. Overall, he’s a flat character. He’s one of the main characters in this story and not much happens in detail with him.
The boy can either choose to keep the girl, or the bass. He ends up choosing the girl. We know that he gives up the bass from how he cuts the line to let the bass go. The boy had chosen to keep Sheila over the bass, from how she looked in the boat when she had reached her arms towards and the boy could see the shape of her body. The narrator regrets his decision, due to Sheila leaving him during their date to take a ride in Eric Caswell’s Corvette.

This story is about a boy inviting Sheila Mant to a band but gets stuck deciding between the bass or Sheila Mant. In this journal, I will be predicting and characterizing. During the reading I got caught wondering if the boy will choose the bass or Sheila Mant.

The narrator has a major crush on a women- seventeen year old, Sheila Mant. The narrator finally, and I say finally, asks Sheila on a date via the narrator’s boat.
In the short story, “The Rip”, author Robert Drewe uses the idea of Sophie holding a jellyfish “at arms length” to display how she is becoming wary of her father, John, and is keeping him distanced from herself. he reassures her, as if he was trying to reassure himself that their relationship will not become an “anecdote”, but a reality. John is thinking about how he wants to be freed from his emotional turmoil, and how badly he wants to spend this quality time with his daughter and protect her. This “protection” is symbolised by the shark attack (the divorce of John and his wife), and the fear running through everyones minds. This makes the reader feel as if John is putting pressure on himself to make Sophie like him.
Finding Fish, by Antwone Quenton Fisher is an inspiring novel showing how he overcame adversity. In act one of the novel the reader learned some of the challenges he faced during his childhood including, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Another obstacle to Antwone’s happiness and success was being a ward of the state and spending several years with the Pickett family before he experienced homelessness. Once he was kicked out of the Picket household, he was placed into a boy’s home until he turned eighteen and then he was on his own. He would then stay at a YMCA until it became dangerous and moved onto the streets.
The Boat by Alistair MacLeod is about a boy who grew up in a fishing town and wanted to escape it retelling his story. The unmanned narrator starts the story by telling the readers of his first boat ride. We learn from the story that his father is a fisherman and his mother has always known this life of fishing. So the narrators entire life was spend on a boat; from reading thee we will learn that the boat is a reoccurring theme and it is kind of personified. The we learn that the narrator’s father is an avid reader and is always reading.
Wetherell’s story “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant”. The 14-year old narrator is facing a huge predicament. The boy is on a date with the girl of his dreams. The boy and girl are canoeing up a river in Vermont. The young girl, Sheila, has informed the narrator of her disgust of fishing.
Also, the fish represent the obstacles that one may face while trying to reach their goal and shaping their ability to achieve it. This ultimately challenges them to decide whether to accept the task and grow or abandon their dreams by giving up.
