September 1940 had seen the Tripartite Pact uniting Japan, Italy and Germany formally as the Axis Powers. By December of 1940, British forces began counteroffensive strikes against Italian forces in Egypt and Italian East Africa. The German “Afrika Korps” found themselves fighting in North Africa by 1941. Iraq, however, was a unique front of the War as British troops found themselves fighting a coalition of nationalist Iraqi forces encouraged by Nazi Germany, with supplies and routes provided by the Vichy French, all in order to quell a monarchy-absolving coup d’état.
