Protecting America Protection of the United States has always been a priority. Specifically, during the Cold War Truman was fighting for the protection over the United States government. The Cold War brought threats to the government by Stalin attempting to spread his communist ideologies. The different ideologies and visions that prevented the U.S. and Soviets from working together. Stalin wanted to continue Soviet government as communist to protect from future invasions and Truman wanted democracy because he thought that democracy was the best way to guarantee stability. Protection of the United States has and always will be a priority of course. Protection against invasion also comes up in the terrorist attack of 9/11. To combat these issues, documents like the NSC-68 and Patriot Act were made to abide and work by to ensure the protection of the United States. The NSc-68 suggested that the United States embark on rapid military expansion of conventional forces and the nuclear arsenal, including the development of the hydrogen bomb. NSC-68 explained a number of courses of action to combat the spread of Communism. The return to Isolationism, negotiating with the Soviets, and war were some things that were explained in the NSC-68. Combating “the rapid [build] up of the political, economic, and military strength of the free world” was discussed.
