World War 1 ended in 1914, and the United States entered the 1920s with a booming economy where people had jobs, using their newly earned money to put food on the tables, and to invest into stocks. 1924 came the election of a new president and the American people elected Calvin Coolidge: an economically conservative, laissez-faire approach to government, a person who would keep things the way they were. Coolidge did exactly what they needed at the time for a president, nothing. Herbert Hoover was elected in 1928 following Coolidge, Hoover was a republican, laissez-faire president until in 1929 the Great Depression hit. Hoover needed to act and he developed the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in hopes to turn around the plummeting economy,
Clinton's life was highly different than Nixon’s, however, some of his political turmoil and successes was similar to Nixon’s. Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe to William Blythe and Virginia Blythe on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas; however, his dad died a few months before he was born. Later, when Bill was about four, his mother married Roger Clinton. Roger was a heavy alcoholic who often beat Bill's mother. Like Nixon he experienced a large amount of death and violence.
In the 1920s, many conflict-causing changes came to society with the introduction of women having more jobs, young people breaking away from tradition and authority, African Americans moving North, and traditionalists’ opposition of evolution. Women, having more job opportunities since men had left to fight in WWI, wanted to continue working. Two women governors appeared in the 1920s, as well as the right for women to vote. Young people at this time also wanted more personal freedom. With the introduction of dance marathons, new fashions and fads, etc., young people wanted to choose their careers and lifestyles, undisturbed from their parents.
June 17, 1972 in the case United States vs. Nixon, burglars were arrested in the Watergate building of Washington, DC. The burglars were connected to Richard Nixon’s campaign for president. They were caught wiretapping phones and hacking to steal important documents. Historians didn’t know if Nixon knew about the burglary until he started trying to cover it up. Nixon raised “Hush Money” giving to the burglars to be quiet.
In contrast, Americans believed that Nixon was a very strong and straight-forward leader who would be able to secure “peace with honor”. By 1972, most of U.S. troops were released without appearing to have given into the Communists through Nixon’s strategy of Vietnamization. This helped the positive outlook on Nixon, and the negative outlook on McGovern. Richard Nixon also campaigned with his plan called “southern strategy”. This plan involved releasing pressure off the desegregation of schools and restricting acts of the federal government on behalf of the blacks.
United States v. Nixon and Clinton v. Jones should have had the same outcome from the Supreme Court. Both, former President 's violated the law and wanted to use presidential privileges to dismiss their cases. In the United States v. Nixon, the Court had the right to order the President to relinquish the tapes to Congress to use as evidence for the trial against the seven members held accountable. Those accused were owed a duty by the Court to be given a fair and speedy trial. In the Clinton v. Jones case, the Court should have not granted the former President Clinton immunity because the general public needs to realize that not even the President can violate the law and get away with it.
During the Great Depression Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, used different strategies and ideas to try and get America out of the depression. But ultimately one President failed at doing so, and one President succeeded at doing so. Less than eight months into Herbert Hoover’s presidency, the stock market crashed on Thursday, October 24, 1929. Most experts, including Hoover, thought the crash was part of a passing recession, that would eventually rebound.
As the president of United States of America it can be a little hard to make certain decisions. What the people want and what is for the best for them is very different. Yet this President is for. Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were presidents of the United States, who may have done good or bad throughout their time serving in office.
