“Walter lord brings up during the novel that the reason why most passengers aboard the ship died was due to them not having access to the lifeboats on the Titanic. It mentions, “Especially when everyone realized there weren't enough boats for everyone.” If the Titanic never took this “risk” and experimented with not adding enough lifeboats, we wouldn't know nowadays that boats would need so many lifeboats in case of emergencies. With this, Walter Lord describes the cause and effect of this risk that led to a tragedy. He mentions, “Third officer Pitman…heard the cries…pitman was toned by the dilemma.”
The author starts with a tone of exhilaration and curiosity being “I suddenly obsessed with the story of the Titanic.” Slowly though she slides into a tone of slack jawed awe and morbid fascination with how “It is awesome that we built them; it is awesome when they fell.” To illustrate this she uses many tools such as facts and figures. Gabbert pulls many of her examples from historic acts of human failure like the Titanic or challenger. To further her point she uses eyewitness accounts and personal experience from these people such the North Tower man who said, “Perhaps I should have continued down that hallway.”
The Titanic, most definitely man’s greatest accomplishment, is made in Belfast, Ireland, where it is then set off into the open ocean, and set for Southampton, England. From there, on April 11, 1912, 2:00 p.m., the Titanic sets sail for New York. All seems well, and it looks for the first time, that man has built the “unsinkable ship.” However, the hopes, lives, ship and all are cut down by an iceberg and now rest at the bottom of the Atlantic. This horrendous fact was shown in both the book and the movie, “A Night to Remember,” along with many other facts and stories.
Authors use characters for creative purposes and to convey messages. They also use characters to form stories, examine the dangers or choices these characters have to make, and are used to develop themes. Moreover, characters have to to possess qualities that readers can relate to. In the case of "A Rose for Emily" and "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" , the main characters and how the roles they play center on the loss of love, repression and grudges, and how they can turn a soul into something unrecognizable is analyzed.
The short stories, "A Good man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Conner and "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner are rather horrifying; one tale is about a grandmother and her family brutally murdered by a coldhearted killer, and the other tale is about a lady who murders her lover and then sleeps beside his rotting body. Not only have O'Conner and Faulkner created similar plots in their respective stories, both authors criticize the Southern corruption through the distortion of the characters' world view of reality. The Rose Against the Storm Throughout William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” and Kate Chopin’s “The Storm,” the authors use setting to help get a better understanding of the story. In Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”, he talks about the life of Emily and her stubbornness to let go of loved ones that have passed. in the story, she finds a lover by the name of Homer Barron. It is later revealed that she poisoned and killed him and throughout the years, slept with his decaying body.
Many modernists were inspired by the Civil War, WWI, and the Great Depression to introduce a new theme into literature. This theme consisted of the stream of conscious, and hopelessness. A short piece that has both of these themes is “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” by Katherine Ann Porter. Porter’s short story compared to many other modernistic pieces during the modernist time period. A terrific comparison to this story is the story “Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, which also has both the stream of conscious and hopelessness as themes.
One of the several themes that Priestley has introduced to the play is ‘Time,’ and this theme not only interlinks with some others like ‘Age and Youth’ and ‘Social Responsibility,’ but also introduces a very important drama technique into the play for the audience called the dramatic irony. In Act One, Mr. Birling, as a representative of the older generation of the play and the head of the family, is talking to the others about the progress humanity is making and mentions the liner, Titanic saying it is “unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable.” The word ‘absolutely’ in this context shows just how confident in his words Mr. Birling is, without understanding that it will all change. As the play is set back in 1912, but is performed much later in 1946, after the audience knows, and finds it ironic that Mr. Birling, thinking he is an old, wise man says such nonsense, as time will show.
The Titanic’s maiden voyage was a disaster because the people didn’t prepare for things like this. Most ships go over a safety procedures, but the Titanic didn’t do such a thing. They only rescued wealthy people, which I felt was wrong. Some passengers jumped off the ship in desperation. Whoever drove the ship couldn’t have been paying attention.

The problem with this though was that “the watertight compartment design contained a flaw that was a critical factor in Titanic’s sinking: While the individual bulkheads were indeed watertight, the walls separating the bulkheads extended only a few feet above the waterline, so water could pour from one compartment into another, especially if the ship began to list or pitch forward.” Many people say that the ship was doomed from the start.
