Hip hop has had an immense effect on popular culture. Popular culture is defined as expressions of shared experiences that are much more fundamental to our society, including the values and beliefs that have shaped it, for example, integrity, community, compassion, courage, sacrifice, respect, hard work, and justice. Some would argue that pop culture, as of recently has been shaped by hip hop. Shawn Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z, is a hip hop icon who has transcended music itself through his private person and musical legacy. The fact that his wife is an ultra successful icon herself has added to the his image.
Mike Rose author of “Blue Collar Brilliance” he reminisces about his childhood and how he was observing his mother at work and how much she multitasked and how he experienced the blue collar work. His purpose was to describe how people integrate physical and mental work is in the field and supports people in the blue collar field. I felt as if I was at a dead end job and earning nothing from it, but Mike Rose’s article influenced me that I was actually learning and gaining skills at my work place. His intended audience would be blue collared workers and white collar workers. Rose informing that blue collar workers are also educated people even though they do not have a degree.

This music has been criticized for many things such as its explicit language and its emphasis on drugs and violence. However, there is a side of rap with positive aspects including a focus on social change. Known for his poetic and thought-provoking lyrics, American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar is an example of this side of hip-hop.
Selling over 160 million albums and winning 24 Grammy Awards, Kanye West, also known by the alias “Ye” by many online, is known for his countless hit albums and platinum awards. He smashes records over and over again. Hip-Hop has been defined by competition for many years, even seeping so far into the music that artists create, these works of music are called “Diss Tracks”. Kanye's diss tracks on other artists such as his work “Like That (Remix)” have made his competition feel insignificant compared to him, because of this, Kanye West must be the best rapper in this modern age. Using his own life experiences, he continues to create great music that many people can relate to.

The Voice of a Generation The Kanye West biography is filled with arrogant quotes and narcissistic stories, and although Kanye may not be the most modest man, he has every right to brag due to his immense amount of success. “Someone could be a better rapper, dance better, but culturally impacting? It is established that hip-hop can only be authentic to the black community because of the common experience shared through its lyrics. Eminem’s mimicry of a predominantly black industry within a predominantly white society is described as both ‘authentic’ and ‘grotesque’. The author suggests that Eminem’s success is due to the authenticity and acceptance in his socioeconomic status. The rapper can genuinely relate to his audience not by pretending to know what it’s like to be black, but by using a commonality, poverty, to reach an otherwise unreachable audience. While he receives significant mainstream attention from his bold remarks, the 21 time award-winning Grammy artist contains an arsenal of creative genius which cannot be ignored. In the history of mainstream music, an artist’s relevancy often follows the trends of their contemporaries. Artists often come and go, becoming irrelevant after a few years. Hip hop critics believe that hip hop is a violent subculture and supports crime and violence, but research has shown that there is no direct correlation between the two. One hip-hop artist that goes against this stereotype is Kanye Omari West. Mr. West lyrics allows the listener to understand that you don’t have to rap about having money and cars to get someone’s attention. In Kanye West’s Homecoming, he said, “Reach for the stars, so if you fall you land on the clouds.” This is an influential quote that encourages the listener to reach for their goals, but if you happen to fail on the way it’ll be ok because you have a comfort system to be there for you.
